herrahuu(1724) whispers: what happens if Qxc5?
herrahuu(1724) whispers: instead }
9.O-O {(0:40)
smallblackcat(2110) whispers: longer term trade-off here is that my LSQ bishop is not doing anything for quite a while
smallblackcat(2110) whispers: now Bxc5 gets hit with Rb3 Qa5 Rb5, Qxc5 c4 probably and the position opens up rather nastily }
9...Be7 {(0:49)
smallblackcat(2110) whispers: so I'll play the safer move
smallblackcat(2110) whispers: I don't think he can force a draw with perpetual attack on my queen here, and anyway I'm sure he wouldn't want to

11...Qa3 {(1:18)} 12.e5 {(0:10)} Nd7 {(0:58)
smallblackcat(2110) whispers: now Bb5 I suppose
smallblackcat(2110) whispers: still doesn't quite seem like the trap closes, Bb5 a6 Bc1 Qb4 and I don't see a dangerous discovery
smallblackcat(2110) whispers: but I think he should prevent Qa4
smallblackcat(2110) whispers: c4 Qa4 seems ok, Nb4 might also be good there
smallblackcat(2110) whispers: trouble is he has both short-term and long-term compensation
pchesso(2060) whispers: looks like a french defense now
pchesso(2060) whispers: looking at it superficially, i might just play h4 here, instead of trying to trap the queen }

15.Qh5 {(0:18)
smallblackcat(2110) whispers: yeah so he's going to force some more concessions and try to prove that his positional advantages are worth a pawn
pchesso(2060) whispers: no need to prove that i think :D
smallblackcat(2110) whispers: pondering Nf8-g6 and if Bxg6 fxg6
smallblackcat(2110) whispers: leaves e6 rather weak of course, but that's where the awful bishop on c8 comes in handy }
15...Nf8 {(5:09)
herrahuu(1724) whispers: Nxe6 is threatened?
smallblackcat(2110) whispers: I like the idea too much not to play it
herrahuu(1724) whispers: not here :)

smallblackcat(2110) whispers: hmm now that I've castled I can seriously consider just nabbing the a-pawn
smallblackcat(2110) whispers: taking it straight away at least offers him a draw though, so Nxd4 first
herrahuu(1724) whispers: yeah, Qxa2 Ra1 and you've got just one square, i didn't waste 30 seconds looking at that position }

smallblackcat(2110) whispers: that looks like quite a good move though

pchesso(2060) whispers: black shouldn't be allowed to get away with this, asking for so much trouble :)
smallblackcat(2110) whispers: f5 now seems indicated
smallblackcat(2110) whispers: doesnt seem to work
smallblackcat(2110) whispers: well I can play g6, but it looks so risky
smallblackcat(2110) whispers: g6 h5 g5 Nh3 f5 perhaps
smallblackcat(2110) whispers: oh he can just sac on g6, cos Bf4 and Rg3 are coming
pchesso(2060) whispers: white might be preparing Nh5, Bf4, Rg3 here

pchesso(2060) whispers: Nf6+
pchesso(2060) whispers: or Bxh6 first?
Lionskins(1749) whispers: best reason for N-f6 is that is gets Black's DSB off of protecting a3
Lionskins(1749) whispers: but p-a2 is an issue
pchesso(2060) whispers: Nf6+ and i think black must play Bxf6, because Kg7 Bxh6+ Kxh6 Qg5+ Kg7 Nh5+ }
28.Bxh6 {(10:54)
pchesso(2060) whispers: will be interesting to check after the game
smallblackcat(2110) whispers: I guess this is more to allow Nf4 than to take on f8
Lionskins(1749) whispers: yes but the net effect of it , is taking the B away from Qside impact
smallblackcat(2110) whispers: I'll gladly give up the Rf8 here to remove an attacker

smallblackcat(2110) whispers: and I still don't
pingupenguin(2067) whispers: too many white pieces converged on the king
pingupenguin(2067) whispers: black still has 2 pieces out of the def

{smallblackcat resigns} 1-0
gmfree (2023-11-04): I think Black was winning for the first 20 moves. I didn't get a good position out of the opening, and more or less piled up pressure on the Kingside to prove I had compensation for the pawns. I think pushing the A-pawn was premature, and the defence of the King was a more pressing issue for for Black. Had he secured his K safety first, he's probably going to convert with those two passers. In a sense, all though it was a bit scary, he gave me 5 tempi pushing that A-Pawn all the way. Even so I was fortunate to have the Bb1+ resource. I think this is a good lesson for both of us! I need to decide whether I want to play pure London games, or be more flexible. Played Nbd2 too quickly, and although I considered the 'Jobava Knight' on c3, I'm not as familiar with those lines. Still, there are Queen traps and definitely compensation for the pawn. After I knew I was going to lose the 2nd, I had to go all in on the King! I think with correct defence, he's probably still winning. So. I think he underestimated the danger of so many pieces homing in on his King. Nice game though. Thanks SBC x
