White went astray fairly early in the opening:
It seems like 2.e3 was too passive, and after 2...e5, white should just play 3.fxe5.
Besides, 5.g3 was a mistake, weakening the white squares on the kingside – which Black exploited soon after with his white-squared bishop. Better would have been the immediate 5.d3, challenging the e4 square (though it seems to leave white with a weak pawn on e3, which was also a problem in this game…).
